Not-So-Hidden Health Benefits of Dark Chocolate and Cacao
Dark chocolate and cacao nibs offer several potential health benefits when consumed in moderation. Here are some of the key benefits associated with these products:
Nutrient-rich
Dark chocolate and cacao nibs are packed with essential nutrients such as fiber, iron, magnesium, copper, and manganese. They also contain flavonoids, which are powerful antioxidants that help protect the body against oxidative stress.
Heart health
The flavonoids found in dark chocolate and cacao nibs have been linked to improved heart health. They may help lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation, improve blood flow, and enhance overall cardiovascular function.
Antioxidant properties
Dark chocolate and cacao nibs are rich in antioxidants, which can help neutralize harmful free radicals in the body. By doing so, they may contribute to reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, certain cancers, and neurodegenerative disorders.
Mood enhancement
Consuming dark chocolate and cacao nibs can trigger the release of endorphins and serotonin in the brain, which are natural mood boosters. These compounds may help improve mood, reduce anxiety and stress, and promote a sense of well-being.
Cognitive function
The flavonoids in dark chocolate and cacao nibs have been associated with potential cognitive benefits. They may help enhance blood flow to the brain, improve cognitive performance, and protect against age-related cognitive decline.
Blood sugar regulation
Dark chocolate and cacao nibs have a lower glycemic index compared to other sugary treats. This means they have a milder impact on blood sugar levels and can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet for individuals with diabetes or those aiming to manage blood sugar levels.
Skin health
The antioxidants found in dark chocolate and cacao nibs may also have positive effects on the skin. They can help protect against UV damage, improve skin hydration and elasticity, and promote a healthy complexion.
Remember that while dark chocolate and cacao nibs offer potential health benefits, they should still be consumed in moderation. Choose products with a high percentage of cacao (70% or more) and minimal added sugars or other unhealthy additives.
A Dynamic Duo: Dark Chocolate & Cannabis
Dark chocolate and cannabis is quite the intriguing duo. Dark chocolate, with its rich flavor and health benefits, not only provides a delectable treat but also has the potential to enhance the effects of cannabis. In this blog post, we will explore how dark chocolate can increase the effects of cannabis, creating a unique and enjoyable experience.
Synergistic Compounds
Dark chocolate contains a variety of compounds that can interact synergistically with cannabis, heightening its effects. Firstly, dark chocolate is rich in anandamide, often referred to as the "bliss molecule." Anandamide is an endocannabinoid naturally produced by the human body and plays a role in regulating mood and pleasure. When consumed, dark chocolate's anandamide content can complement the cannabinoids in cannabis, intensifying the overall experience.
Enhanced Bioavailability
Another factor contributing to the increased effects of cannabis when paired with dark chocolate is enhanced bioavailability. Dark chocolate contains a substance called fatty acids, which can assist in the absorption of cannabinoids. Cannabinoids, including THC and CBD, are fat-soluble compounds. When combined with dark chocolate's fatty acids, these cannabinoids have a higher chance of being efficiently absorbed by the body, leading to a more pronounced and prolonged effect.
Mood Enhancement and Relaxation
Both dark chocolate and cannabis have independently been associated with mood enhancement and relaxation. Dark chocolate contains phenylethylamine, a compound known for its mood-enhancing properties. Similarly, cannabis interacts with the endocannabinoid system in the body, influencing mood, stress response, and overall well-being. When consumed together, dark chocolate and cannabis can potentially synergize their mood-enhancing effects, resulting in a heightened sense of relaxation and euphoria.
Taste and Sensory Experience
The enjoyment of consuming cannabis goes beyond its effects. The taste and sensory experience play a significant role in enhancing the overall journey. Dark chocolate, with its smooth texture and rich flavors, can provide an excellent medium for consuming cannabis. Combining the earthy, herbal taste of cannabis with the sweetness and complexity of dark chocolate creates a delightful fusion that stimulates the palate and enhances the overall experience.
Dosing Considerations
While combining dark chocolate and cannabis can offer an enhanced experience, it is crucial to consider proper dosing and personal tolerance levels. The potency of cannabis edibles can vary, and the effects may take longer to manifest compared to other consumption methods. Therefore, it is essential to start with low doses, particularly when combining cannabis with dark chocolate for the first time. Gradually increase the dosage as needed, always being mindful of personal tolerance and the potential for amplified effects.

Recipe for Making Cannabis Infused Dark Chocolate and Cacao Bark
If you’re new to the process of cannabis decarboxylation and infusion, visit the tCheck blog to learn more about how to decarb, infuse, and test your homemade cannabis creations. Without further adieu, let’s whip up something delicious!
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup cannabis-infused coconut oil (adjust potency according to your preference)
- 12 ounces dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa), finely chopped
- 1/2 cup cacao nibs
- 1/4 cup chopped nuts (optional)
- Pinch of sea salt (optional)
Instructions:
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
- In a heatproof bowl, melt the chopped dark chocolate over a double boiler. Fill a saucepan with a few inches of water and bring it to a simmer. Place the heatproof bowl on top of the saucepan, making sure the bottom of the bowl does not touch the water. Stir the chocolate occasionally until it is completely melted and smooth.
- Once the chocolate is melted, remove the bowl from the heat. Add the cannabis-infused coconut oil to the melted chocolate and stir until well combined.
- Pour the chocolate mixture onto the prepared baking sheet. Use a spatula to spread the chocolate into an even layer, about 1/4 inch thick.
- Sprinkle the cacao nibs evenly over the melted chocolate. If desired, sprinkle the chopped nuts and sea salt over the top as well (our favorite add-in is pumpkin seeds).
- Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator and let the chocolate bark chill for at least 1 hour, or until firm and set.
- Once the chocolate is completely hardened, remove it from the refrigerator and break it into small pieces or shards.
- Store the cannabis-infused dark chocolate bark in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
REMINDER: When working with cannabis-infused coconut oil, be mindful of the potency and your desired dosage. Start with a small amount and adjust accordingly based on your personal tolerance.
